Exploring Our Favorite Hidden Gems of Trempealeau, Wisconsin

We feel so lucky to call Trempealeau, Wisconsin, our home-away-from-home. Ever since our first camping trip here back in 2021, it has been our favorite place to take in the sweeping vistas of the Mississippi River. The hiking trails are unmatched; you will see what I mean when you get to the top of a river bluff and look out for miles and miles, watching faraway freight trains follow the winding river, eagles soaring along the bluffs, and the grasses blowing in the breeze. All of my stresses melt away when I’m in nature along the Mississippi.

This past April, our family purchased Lake Road Campground, a sweet little RV park nestled right along the Mississippi River, just minutes from downtown Trempealeau, Perrot State Park, Sullivan’s Supper Club, and so many other area treasures. We’re just 20 minutes north of La Crosse and 20 minutes south of Winona, MN, and so it really is a great central location for visiting this beautiful area.

Now that our family owns our little campground, we are up here every weekend and are taking our time to explore the many incredible things to do. Here are some of our favorites so far!

Where to See the Best Views

Perrot State Park Trails
Perrot State Park holds a special place in our hearts. It was this trip back in 2021 that made us realize we wanted to spend a lot more time here. With over 1,200 acres of natural beauty, Perrot is the perfect place for family hikes. We often trek the Brady’s Bluff Trail, where the breathtaking views of the Mississippi River never fail to amaze us. For a more challenging adventure, we hit the Perrot Ridge Trail, which offers panoramic vistas of the bluffs and river valleys.

Where to Relax and Unwind

Canoe or Kayak at Perrot State Park

The 3.4-mile Voyageurs Canoe Trail is the perfect way to relax and unwind on the river. This trail takes you to the confluence of the Trempealeau River and the Mississippi. We don’t have our own canoes or kayaks (yet!), so we rent from Perrot State Park headquarters. There’s nothing quite like being right there on the water with the birds, the fish, the bugs, and the breeze as you experience the towering river bluffs.

Lock and Dam No. 6
Our campground is located right at the Lock and Dam No. 6. That means we get to see barges come through the lock, which is so cool! We often take the short walk to the dam in the evenings with our fishing poles and see what’s biting. There is a walkway and benches to sit down and enjoy the views.

This is also the home of Trempealeau Marina, which also features a little restaurant. You can rent pontoons to take out on the river. We are planning to do that this summer when we have family come down from Minnesota to visit – I can’t wait!
