The Mississippi River spans from its source in Lake Itasca in northern Minnesota to its mouth at the Golf of Mexico in Louisiana. Between Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Winfield, Missouri, there is a system of 25 locks & dams.
Our campground, Lake Road Campground, in beautiful Trempealeau, Wisconsin, is located right at Lock & Dam #6. Nearly every evening, we finish up dinner and take a short walk over to the dam to see if any fish are biting and to see if any barges are coming through the lock.
You can walk right up right up to the lock. There is an overlook where you can get a great view of the barges coming through. It’s so neat to watch and a great experience for the kids! We loved learning that one barge can hold the same amount of cargo as 1,050 semi trucks!
The Trempealeau Marina is just a short walk past the Lock & Dam. You can rent a pontoon for a fun day on the river, or you can just hang out at the Dockside Bar and enjoy the beautiful views and say hello to the boaters coming in from all up and down the Mississippi. This is a pretty cool spot – and just a 5-minute walk from Lake Road Campground! Find us on Instagram to see a great video of our recent visit to the Lock & Dam! Follow us @LakeRoadCampground!
